Ukrainian forces last week launched a series of cruise missile attacks on a shipyard in the Black Sea port city of Sevastopol, located on the southwestern edge of the Crimean peninsula and home to the Sea Fleet.

The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed that 10 cruise missiles and 3 Ukrainian suicide boats attacked the Russian shipyard in Sevastopol, causing damage to 2 ships being repaired here.

Andriy Yusov, a Ukrainian military intelligence official, said that the Russian ships suffered significant damage that was likely beyond repair.

`This is truly the biggest attack on Sevastopol since the conflict broke out,` said Andriy Ryzhenko, a retired Ukrainian navy colonel.

Satellite photos taken by Black Sky company on September 13 show two Russian ships severely damaged while anchored at the factory’s floating dock in Sevastopol.

`The Kilo-class submarine Rostov-on-Don and the Ropucha-class landing ship of Project Minsk 775 were seriously damaged,` Black Sky said.

New images allegedly taken of the Rostov-on-Don submarine spread on social networks on September 18 seem to show heavy damage to this military vehicle.

Images released by the Conflict Intelligence Team (CIT) show Russian submarines damaged after Ukraine’s attack.

Bryan Clark, a former US Navy submarine officer and defense expert at the Hudson Institute, said the damage was believed to be `severe enough to completely destroy the submarine`.

`If the hole in the side of the ship’s hull described (in the photo) is accurate, water flooding in would make saving the ship very difficult and could potentially damage many internal equipment,` the expert said.

`This may have been the result of an explosion inside the ship, suggesting extensive internal damage to the hull. There was also some less significant structural damage, which could have been repaired if

Previously, the British Ministry of Defense also said that the Russian submarine `could suffer catastrophic damage` and any effort to return the ship to normal operations could take many years and cost hundreds of millions.

Defense Express newspaper commented that this is the first time since the conflict broke out that Ukraine has successfully destroyed a Russian submarine.

Meanwhile, Frederik Mertens, strategic analyst at the Hague Center for Security Studies, said the damage to the submarine in Crimea will not significantly impact Russia’s ability to carry out missile attacks.

Recently, Ukraine has increased the frequency of attacks on targets in and around Crimea, including the Crimean bridge and ships of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

Crimea is a peninsula located in southern Ukraine, holding a strategic position on the Black Sea.
