According to sources, as a result, Kiev forces lost more than 8 infantry fighting vehicles, including 5 BMP-2s and 3 new Rosomak armored vehicles nicknamed `Wolves` by Poland.
It is unclear which unit these vehicles belong to, but they may be the reformed 22nd Mechanized Brigade, which also operates PT-91, T-72AMT and T-72 Ural tanks.
In the battle video analyzed by Forbes on September 27, Kiev’s attack was unsuccessful, causing them to suffer major losses in armored vehicles.
`This is the first time Ukraine has lost Rosomak armored vehicles donated by Poland earlier this year. Most likely they are on the payroll of the 22nd Mechanized Brigade, which specializes in operating many types of weapons donated by the West,` expert
It was this brigade that on September 24 deployed forces to attack the Russian lines near the village of Andriivka on the southern edge of the city of Bakhmut, in Donetsk.
The strategic motivation surrounding Bakhmut is simple.
In the 15 weeks since the counteroffensive began, Ukrainian brigades have advanced several kilometers north and south of Bakhmut, especially the south.
However, Russian forces reinforced their defense lines and took advantage of the terrain features of large fields to fiercely resist, causing Ukrainian troops to encounter many difficulties and suffer great risks in terms of human life and health.
If the 3rd Brigade’s effective attacks were the reward for the counteroffensive in Ukraine’s east, then such failed attacks around Andriivka were the price to pay.
Rosomak is an 8-wheeled armored personnel carrier produced by Poland under a license to copy the Finnish Patria AMV line.
Rosomak has the ability to wade through water, but this is also its biggest weakness.
Losing 3 Rosomak vehicles in just one attack is a big loss for the operator, but fortunately more vehicles will be supplied to Ukraine, sources said.
The Polish government in April pledged to provide Kiev with 200 Rosomaks, making it the most numerous Western combat vehicle in Ukraine’s arsenal, on par with 200 infantry fighting vehicles (
Of these, 100 vehicles are expected to be supplied this year, the first vehicles were handed over to the Ukrainian army in July. Polish media said that the remaining 100 vehicles will be produced according to orders using resources.
