For the soldiers of Ukraine’s `Spartan` brigade, danger lurks behind every bush and in every area as they seek to breach Russian lines.
Efforts to overcome Russia’s vast minefields and fortified defenses have been much slower than Ukrainians expected since the counteroffensive began in early June.
Members of the Spartan brigade told Reuters in the southern Zaporizhzhia region that Russian troops have expert knowledge of the terrain where they are fighting because they controlled the area for much of the war.
A 21-year-old soldier nicknamed Jordan said: `The difficulty was that the enemy was tightly entrenched and deployed minefields. During more than a year and a half of war, Russian gunners targeted every field in
`They knew every inch of the ground and had precise targeting, but we conducted counter-battery operations well and destroyed their self-propelled artillery, self-propelled artillery and other types of artillery,` Jordan said.
Another member of the brigade, Stepan, admitted that Ukraine’s advance was slow but tactical.
`Every inch of land, every field, every bush – there will always be someone waiting for you there and our forces have to go in there to make sure they are no longer there. It’s just our comrades.`
Stepan, 38 years old, was a metallurgical worker before joining the Spartan brigade, part of the National Guard of Ukraine.
`Dangerous Russian guided bombs fall here almost every 15-20 minutes. You never know who and where these weapons will hit. I don’t know what will happen. But in the end
Previously, many Ukrainian soldiers admitted to the New York Times that they were affected by the severity of the war with Russia.
Sergeant Vladyslav Ruziev, 28 years old, admitted that he was one of the Ukrainian soldiers who suffered psychological trauma after the war with Russia broke out from February 2022 until now.
Ruziev said he often had nightmares about the unit he fought in facing continuous attacks by the Russian army in the cold winter with many soldiers seriously injured, even losing legs and arms.
According to Mr. Ruziev, there were times when the fighting was so intense that Ukraine recorded a huge number of casualties.
According to the Washington Post, the physical and mental losses of the Ukrainian side are increasing as Russia deploys a large number of minefields to block Kiev’s advance, causing more and more soldiers to be seriously injured.
Tanisha Fazal, a professor of research on medical care during war at the University of Minnesota (USA), said that psychological damage, mine disposal issues, and casualties will have a long-term impact on Ukraine.
